THE DRIVE TOOK MORE than an hour, so by the time she got out of the car, her bladder was protesting. "Restroom?" Sofie asked.
He unlocked the front door. "Just up the stairs to the right."
A few minutes later, she found him seated at a table in a large kitchen engrossed in Johanâs notebooks. "This place has a farmhouse vibe. It reminds me of Claudia's grandpaâs house."
"It could use some modernization."
"No. It's perfect the way it is."
"You think?"
"They don't make kitchens like this anymore. They were once the heart of the home."
"This one definitely was. My mom and grandma used to do their canning in here."
"This is your family's place?"
"Don't look so surprised."
"I assumed you'd take me to another safe house."
"Few people know about this place, so I thought you would be safe here."
"Am I safe from you?"
"Do you want to be?"
"I'm not sure." Her stomach did a little flip. She was positive she didn't want to be safe from him, but it wasn't wise to jump into something too soon. They needed to take their time. Her heart needed to mend.
"I'll keep my distance."
"Thatâs a shame."
"What's that?"
"Nothing." She walked around the house admiring the old hardwood floors and colonial woodwork and then rejoined him in the kitchen. "Doesn't anybody live here?"
"Not at the moment."
"Why not?"
"My mother moved to Virginia to be closer to me."
"If you live in Virginia, why are you working a case in Pennsylvania?"
"I went to Legion University, so my superiors thought it might give us a tactical advantage to have someone who knew the school and the area."
"Makes sense." She sat in the chair across from him and stared into his crystal blue eyes. "Don't you have anyone in Virginia who might miss you?"
"Sure. My mother and my sister."
"Oh."
"If you're trying to fish for whether I have a wife or girlfriend waiting at home, the answer is no."
"No girlfriend?"
"If there was one, do you think I would've kissed you like I did?"
"I don't know."
"I wouldn't have."
"We should talk about something else."
âGood idea. Why did you keep these notebooks from me?â
She bit her bottom lip. âIâm not sure.â
âHow can I trust you when you keep lying to me?â
âI didnât lie. I just didnât tell you everything.â
âYou told me the notebooks would be difficult to get. That wasnât true about these, now was it?â
âNo. I guess not.â
âWhy did you lie?â
âI was afraid of what youâd find.â
âLike?â
âI donât know. Some connection to Johan.â
âTrust me, hon. I want to protect you. Iâm not looking to persecute Johan.â
âOkay. Letâs change the subject again.â
âAnd talk about what?â
"Why don't you have a girlfriend?"
"I thought you wanted to talk about something else?"
"I changed my mind."
"Hope this one works."
"What?" she asked.
"Never mind. You're awfully nosy, Miss Marino."
"Answer the question."
"Which one?"
"Why don't you have a girlfriend?"
"I did."
"And?"
He clenched and unclenched his jaw a few times before answering. "It didn't work out."
"Okay." She sat down beside him.
"My turn."
"Your turn for what?"
"To ask you a question."
"Ask away."
"Why didn't you and Johan marry?"
"You don't start with the easy questions, do you?"
He leaned back in his chair and waited for her answer.
