Your True Colors

How do I determine which colors are right for my clients? I begin with the color of their hair—because it’s generally the most saturated hue on a person’s body, it makes for an obvious starting point. It’s a clearer benchmark than skin tone, which encompasses a million and a half shades between here and eternity and changes depending on season. But skin tone is crucial, and you’ll never know whether a particular color works for you until you see it next to your face. So in this chapter and in the color primer in the color insert, I’m going to be breaking down your colors according to your hair and assigning you a color category you’ll use to identify your palette; but whether you’re a Honey, a Caviar, a Copper, or a Silver, you’ll want to play around within your category to see what works for your particular skin tone.

If you dye your strands, should you map your colors according to your natural-born hair color or your chosen hue? It’s a complicated question. Because your hair presents such a wide swath of color so close to your face, its shade is important, regardless of whether it is natural or not. But if your platinum blond hair is joined by the olive skin of a dark-eyed brunette, your best bet will be a sampling across both of these categories. So check them both out below and in the color insert, and see what works.

After hair color, the natural hue to which I want you to pay the most attention is the color of your eyes. We always want to draw the focus to the eyes, the window to the soul, and the secondary pop of color that animates our base palette. The eyes speak volumes, and the more we can draw them out, the louder their statement will be.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, know that in this area a little bit of focus goes a long way. Just by bringing your attention to your colors, by posing the question of whether a particular color is right for you, you are embarking on a process that is going to be nothing short of transformative. As you start developing your consciousness, you’ll soon find yourself able to pull a shirt up by your face and make a quick-fire determination about whether it’s doing anything for you.

When a color is the right one for you, you’ll know right away. The best colors make us look healthier, more vital, more alive; they may also make our eyes look more vivid. The worst colors immediately wash us out, making us look pale and tired. Here’s a rule of thumb: If a shirt fits but is somehow making you feel less than attractive, the issue is probably the color.

Read on to find out what your hair color means for your palette, but know that color is endlessly complex and individual. What looks fantastic on one brunette may not work for another—and what looks great on you at the height of summer may not work in the depths of winter.
