CHAPTER 6
INTERPERSONAL RELATIONS
6.1
Men who are successful in this world are those
Who are generous to one’s own people,
Kind to attendants,
Smart with the malevolent,
Loving towards the good, shrewd with the wicked,
Frank with scholars,
Courageous with enemies, humble with the elderly,
And stern with women
How can one become successful in life? One has to deal with different types of people and deal with each of them differently. In this neeti, Chanakya gives guidelines to interact with a variety of people that will come your way.
Generosity, kindness, smartness, love and shrewdness
Be generous to your relatives and take care of them. You should be compassionate to your servants and helpers. With malicious people, it’s better to counter them at their game. Be smart while dealing with them. Be loving towards those who are good to you. With those who make mischief, you should be firm.
Frankness, courage, humility and sternness
When it comes to dealing with scholars, it is better to be straightforward, because they are intelligent and can see through the drivel. Be courageous while dealing with your enemies. With the elderly, you should be humble for they have seen more of life. Women were considered inferior to men (both physically and mentally) during Chanakya’s time, so he says while dealing with women, one must be stern, as if one is dealing with a naughty child. According to Chanakya, a person who has mastered the art of handling every type of personality is sure to succeed in this world.
6.2
He who considers another’s wife as his mother
Another’s money as a lump of clay
Pains and pleasures of all beings as his own
Is a true pundit
How should you treat others? What should your attitude be towards other human beings? Here Chanakya lists the appropriate way to perceive people and things that don’t belong to you.
Another’s wife and money
Always regard another man’s wife as your own mother. In this way, you are showing respect for the woman, her husband and their relationship. This will help you garner the goodwill of that entire family and society in general. Money that does not belong to you should be treated as inconsequential. You should only enjoy the fruits you have earned through your hard work.
Pain and pleasures
One should be able to treat all beings as you do yourself. Try to see yourself in others; treat their pains and pleasures as your own. You are then at a higher level of spirituality. According to Chanakya, a person who knows this and also puts this wisdom to practice is indeed a pundit.
6.3
The one who criticizes others
Without knowing their merits
Is like the Bhil woman who discards
The pearl from the head of the elephant and
picks up the berry
One should be able to differentiate between good and bad. Only then will one be considered wise.
Criticizing others
Some of us like to criticize others at the drop of a hat, even if they are strangers. No wonder such a person lacks the ability to discern right from wrong, which is essential to succeed in life. Understand people well before judging them. You may not know what kind of difficulties they are experiencing in their life.
