Family Preferences

When parents first become aware their children are highly gifted, the educational ramifications can be frightening. “I don’t want my child in college at age 10!” is a common concern. Although the educational progress of highly gifted children can result in a shortened K–12 education, it need not lead to options parents resist.

Because it is virtually impossible to predict the future experience of the highly gifted child in school, it is unwise to plan far ahead. The best planning is done year-by-year, involves the child and teachers, and reviews current progress and options as they are needed. When this is accomplished, only the options children and their families view as helpful are chosen. Highly gifted students are quite careful about accelerative decisions, sometimes making choices to ensure a particular teacher, remain with friends, or even get their driver’s license before proceeding to college. Each brings his or her own values to the decisions. For students who graduate early and enter college younger, choices still exist. Some attend colleges for high-school-aged students. Many attend regular universities, but live at home, live in a dorm close to home, or live in a dorm in another city with a parent moving nearby. Parents create the solutions they need.
