Chapter Six

Katie:

"Not that I have any right to poke my nose into your love life, of course. But as a friend who genuinely cares about you, I just want to say that relationships always come with hurdles. What makes a relationship strong is the fact that you both choose to fight and make it through to the other side," Diane said seriously.

"I don't understand. Are you saying I should forgive James? Did you forget what he did to me?" I asked, feeling very confused.

"I'm saying if you think this guy is worth it, then I think you might want to give him a second chance or at least truly hear him out," she said matter-of-factly.

"I don't think you understand, Diane. Some other woman is carrying his child," I pointed out.

"Do you want to be with him, Katie?" she asked, ignoring my question.

"Yes," I replied sincerely without even needing to give it much thought.

"So, what are you scared of then? An unborn child? I don't know, Katie. I don't want to influence your choice either. I just think you should think this through properly. You've said so yourself that he's come pleading several times. We are adults, and there's no use hiding our feelings. Think this through. What if he finally accepts that you no longer want him? How will you feel if you see him moving on with another woman?"

"Thanks, Diane. I appreciate your advice. But I don’t really agree that all relationships have to go through hard times. I mean, look at you and Charles," I pointed out sincerely.

Diane chuckled first before she replied.

"You think we're perfect, don't you? You have no idea, Katie. I mean, even though we haven't even been together for that long, we've had our own fair share of issues. What makes our relationship different from most is the mature conversations. I believe that has been our saving grace. Charles has encouraged me to speak my mind, and now I do it freely. You just can't undermine the power of a real conversation, Katie. It's like magic. You don’t have to forgive James or take him back, and I am not telling you to. I’m just saying, hear the man out," she said thoughtfully. "Alright. I think I'm starting to talk like I’m some love expert, which of course I'm not," she said laughing.

"No, it's alright. I appreciate your advice," I replied, and we both laughed.

"Anyway, I think we can both agree that if two people love each other, they will make a conscious effort to make things work. I'm available for counselling at the same time next week," she concluded with a mock bow as she laughed. "Alright. All of this talk has just put me in the mood for something sweet," she said, as she signalled to a waiter and ordered ice cream for the two of us.

"One kiwi for me, and–" she paused, signalling to me.

"Chocolate," I replied, laughing at the look on her face.

"Chocolate for my friend here, thank you," she said to the waiter with a smile.
