Chapter Six

Katie:

“Wow. So you basically have two dates on the same weekend?” Lauren asked elatedly.

“No. A date and a family dinner,” I replied flatly. When James had mentioned the celebratory dinner, I had almost turned down the invite on the spot, but I didn’t. Maybe I should have.

“So, what’s there to think about? Of course, you’re going with Charles. At least that’s what I’d do if I were you,” she said bluntly.

“It’s not that simple,” I protest. “James expects me to celebrate with him.”

“But you have plans! Just call and politely tell him that. I mean, how difficult can it be?” she asked, staring at me in confusion.

I let out a sigh.

“Katie?” she called out.

“Yes?”

“Is James your boyfriend?”

“No!” I replied sharply.

“Okay. So what is he to you?”

“He’s– you know– just a client and a close friend. I mean, I think we have the hots for one another, but it’s nothing serious,” I replied, realizing just how confused I am. I also don’t know how to define the relationship I have with James.

“Whatever it is you’re doing to get these hot men clamouring over you, Sis. Please let me in on it,” she said dramatically, her eyes squinting in a plea.

“That was so helpful, Lauren. Thank you,” I replied flatly.

“What? I already advised you. It’s totally up to you now. What else do you want me to do? Force you to listen to me?” she replied defensively. “But then, I really need to consider going into PR too. It must be so much fun. You get to meet all these people. Argh,” she said, rubbing her palms against each other.

Seeing as how there’s nothing left to discuss, I stood and headed to my room to get some much needed privacy. Just as I was about to walk away, Lauren’s loud ringtone pierced the quiet air, startling me.

“Sorry,” she said, and I watched as she declined the call. If I weren’t so wrapped up in my own problems, I would have paid more attention to the troubled look on her face.
