Katie:

After two full days of being directed to Burke's voicemail, he finally messaged me. I honestly thought I would faint from worry.

I breathed a deep sigh of relief as soon as I heard his voice, and my face broke into a smile. But the happiness soon transformed into annoyance after I finished listening to his message and did not find any tangible, explainable reason for his disappearance this entire time. All he talked about was how he had kept himself extremely busy with work so as not to feel my absence and a few other irrelevancies. I went nuts with anxiety for two days, and that's all he has to say?

I tried to create plausible excuses for him in my head. Things he probably hadn't wanted to say on the phone to prevent me from running all the way back home. But somewhere inside me, a part of me disagrees with them too. I picked the phone up to call back but killed the thought as soon as it came.

I headed out to the restaurant for a late dinner after deciding that staying inside my room all night would not make me feel any better. I had planned to whip up something for myself earlier but right now, I am not sure I have the strength.

I walked into the unexpectedly empty restaurant and a waiter attended to me almost immediately. As the waiter takes my order, I decide to express my curiosity.

"Is it usually this empty at this time?"

"Oh. No, ma'am. But tonight, the weather is very nice so most of the guests are either out stargazing, or they are at the bonfire," the waiter replied.

"The bonfire?"

"Yes, ma'am. There's one just beside the grills," he said, pointing out the door.

"Oh. Thank you," I said. He was turning to leave but I stopped him on second thought. Stargazing alone isn't much fun, but eating alone in a large room isn't either.

"Could you please have room service bring my meal to my room?" I requested as I stood and told him my room number.

"Sure, ma'am."

Walking out towards the entrance the waiter had pointed to, I breathed in the cool night air as it rippled through my clothes. If I had known it would be this chilly, I'd have brought along a jacket.

I took a few steps further and saw the golden light of the fire as it crackled– a sight that reminds me of summer camps. I scanned the area to try and find a comfortable spot to sit without interrupting anyone when I caught sight of Erica's now all too familiar bob. As expected, James is seated just beside her. I watched as he slowly bends to kiss her hand. As if the wind was responding to my shock, it rippled through my clothes again. I shivered, and goosebumps appeared on my skin.

"Need a jacket, my lady?" a deep, manly, and heavily accented voice asked from behind me.

I turned to see a tall, slender man smiling at me. I smiled back.

"I wasn't warned that it was going to be so cold tonight," I said with a chuckle.
