Chapter 5
I FOLLOWED him downstairs. The front door beckoned. At the bottom step, I paused. Taylor stood at the entrance to another room, watching me. All trace of anger had vanished, and the bleakness that had been there when we met was back.
“If you really want to go, Daniel, I’ll take out the memory card and return the rest of your gear. It’s up to you. But I need a model for a certain… project… I need to do, and you would be perfect.”
Go or stay? I did feel like I owed him my time, if nothing else.
“I don’t do porn shots.”
The wicked gleam returned to his eyes as he walked back toward me. “I prefer to think of them as erotic, not pornographic.” He glanced at a series of black-and-white photos that lined the wall of the downstairs corridor. They were even more explicit than the pictures upstairs.
“These aren’t like the ones on display in Paddington,” I commented as I studied them.
The one nearest the front door was a silhouette of two men in an intimate embrace. The photograph had been digitally manipulated, so all I could see was the shape of the intertwined bodies, not their facial features or anything else.
A naked man was seated on a stool with his legs splayed while another man knelt between them. They were kissing as they gripped each other’s erect cocks.
“The bloody morals police would get their knickers in a twist with these, wouldn’t they?”
I had to smile. He was right.
He pointed to the next one. Two naked guys sat on the floor with their arms and legs wrapped around each other in a tangle of limbs.
“When couples approach me to have their portraits done, I show them these and leave it up to them. You’d be surprised how intimate and pornographic, if you must use that word, some of the shots I take of them are. These are just to give them ideas of the different poses they could adopt.”
“You make it sound more like a business than art.”
He waved his hand around. “It is a business, a good business.” He stopped, and once again his face clouded. “Or at least it was…. Now, come and help me with the chair. It’s too awkward to carry by myself.”
I followed him into what turned out to be another long living room that also faced the sea. In this case, instead of shrouded doors, bare windows looked onto a neatly manicured garden. Only fifteen yards away, a high brick fence blocked all view of the ocean. This area was totally different from the one above. The old-fashioned furniture here reminded me of Connie’s living area.
“Here, give me a hand with this.”
Taylor indicated a pale green high-backed chair with padded arms and a wide seat. I lifted one end. No wonder he wanted my assistance. The damn thing weighed a ton.
“It’s not so much the weight that’s the problem, it’s the shape. We’ll have to carry the chair on an angle to get it into the studio.
