The Pesky Mosquito
Researching through my 1976 Llewellyn Moon Sign Book, I came across an interesting article on fishing by E. A. Lawrence about that bane of the angler â the pesky mosquito. According to Lawrence, fishing can be made more enjoyable by timing our activities to the cycle of the moon, and we can minimize our discomfort.
This is because the mosquito, like many other insects, is influenced by the moon (moths take their bearings by the moon when flying at night). Proof of this relationship was recently provided by Dr. N. H. Anderson of the department of entomology at Oregon State University at Corvallis.
Dr. Anderson has been catching insects in specially designed traps for many years. He reports that there are about one-fifth the mosquitoes flying about on nights when there is a full moon than when the moon is new or in its last quarter. Other entomologists have also reported that there are thousands more female mosquitoes in the air during the new moon than there are during the full moon. Scientists attached to the U.S. Army Medical Service and the U.S. Army Environmental Hygiene Agency corroborate this observation.
What these studies suggest, of course, is that rather than spraying ourselves with all kinds of dangerous pesticides, we should plan our summer-evening picnics and barbecues at times other than those days and nights when there is going to be a new moon. The best time for a relatively pest-free recreational event, according to these scientists, is during the cycle of the full moon.
I have mentioned elsewhere that Avonâs Skin-So-Soft will repel mosquitoes, but it bears repeating. How nice! You can take a beauty treatment at the same time.
