Discussion Questions

In this case study, there was some evidence that subjective norms and perceived control became more important behavioral predictors than attitudes were. Can you think of examples when attitudes would be the most important predictor? Why are attitudes more important in those cases?

One attitude that mattered in this case was soldiers’ attitudes toward drug use. However, other attitudes might have been at play, such as the attitude of being a good family member once home, an attitude about being an “addict,” and so on. Describe three additional attitudes not already identified that may have been involved in the soldiers’ drug usage after returning home.

Identify a behavior in your own life that is particularly influenced by each of the three variables in the theory of planned behavior: perceived control, subjective norms, and attitudes. Has your behavior changed over time, as these three variables fluctuate?

How could an addictions counselor use the theory of planned behavior to help a client become less addicted to drugs over several sessions? What other therapeutic uses can you see for the theory of planned behavior?
