1. Cut a block of rubber slightly larger than you want your letter to be. Draw or transfer a letter using your favorite method (figure 1). See Drawing the Design for tips.

TIP

I usually draw the entire alphabet on one large block, then cut it into smaller blocks to carve, but you can cut, draw, and carve one block at a time if that’s more manageable.

2. With a permanent marker, mark your design for carving. Here I’m marking the area that will not be carved (figure 2).

3. With the #1, or smallest, blade, carve a moat around the outside and inside edges of the letter (figure 3). Remember to protect your points!
