On the afternoon of 6 June 1942 the light cruiser Atlanta steams past Hornet, with New Orleans astern of her, to go to the assistance of the destroyer Phelps which was broken down, reputedly due to lack of fuel. (USN)

* Elsewhere it has been stated that twenty-four A6M-2N ‘Rufe’ seaplane fighters were brought in by Chitose on 3 July 1942. According to USSBS Interrogations Nos 98 and 99 the seaplane carrier brought in troops and six midget submarines. The fact that ‘Jake’, ‘Pete’, and ‘Rufe’ were all Type 0 floatplanes has tended to confuse many authorities when attempting to clarify the somewhat involved system of type designators used by the IJN.
