Chapter Sixteen

Thunk.

Capri placed her hands on Thall's chest, pushed up and peered around in the darkness. "I think something hit the boat."

Thall heaved an exasperated sigh. I suppose I have to go do the hero thing. Shifting out from under her, he adjusted the front of his slacks, walked to the railing and peered into the inky blackness.

Thunk.

"It's over there." Capri pointed to the opposite side of the yacht. She stepped behind Thall and followed him to the left side of the bow. As he leaned over to check the water, she rose onto her toes and tried to peek over his shoulder.

He shrugged. "I don't see anything. It's just too damn dark."

Capri wrapped her fingers around his bicep and squeezed. "What's that?" She pointed. "Over there?"

"I don't see anything."

She placed her hands on both sides of his head and turned him to face the direction she was looking. "That. That big, dark log thing." With a gasp, she released him and stumbled back. "You don't think…"

He turned and placed his hands on her waist. "No, I don't think it's a body."

Her hand flew to her mouth. "From the tsunami. It could've been pulled—" She shoved him aside, leaned over the railing and heaved.

Thall stepped behind and held her hips. His groin brushed against her bare ass. The urge that had been denied raised a flag. He scolded himself that this was not the proper time and held out his hand to help Capri straighten up.

"I don't want to be here anymore." She wrapped her arms around her chest for a second then padded toward the stairs.

Thall followed her below deck. Her suitcases lay against the stools next to the breakfast bar. He picked one up and opened the door. The automatic light clicked on. "Your room." He placed the suitcase on the edge of the bed then left to retrieve the other.

"This door here, leads to." He slid it open. "Your head—bathroom in boat language. I'm hoping mine has aired out by now."

"Sorry. It was the first one I could find." Capri leaned past him and peered inside. As she did, Thall caught a glimpse of her breasts in the mirror's reflection. A whiff of her scent tickled his nose. The flag threatened to be hoisted again. He inhaled a deep breath and released it.

"If you need me, shout." He crossed the room.

She chewed her thumbnail. "You're…not going to…like stand guard or something?"

He turned to face her. "Guard against what? We're in the middle of the ocean."

Capri closed her eyes, placed her hand on her belly and swayed. Opening her eyes, she met his gaze. "I'm scared. I'd really like if you…"

Thall blinked and shrugged a begrudging agreement to her request. What else could he do? A beautiful, naked woman wanted him to protect her. He stepped through the doorway and slid it shut.

As he entered his room, he mumbled, "This kind of sucks. I thought the hero always got laid. And didn't spend the night sleeping on deck, hoping that it isn't a dead body banging against the boat.
