The new shoots will continue to develop in one of two possible growing configurations—each demanding specific treatment in order to maximize horizontal sprawl and the subsequent development of budding areas. How you treat this growth will be dependent on whether the fan leaves are developing opposite each other or in a staggered formation. These telltale characteristics will become obvious once the growing tips have reached about three to five inches in length, taking 10 to 14 days.

THE TREATMENT PROTOCOL FOR STAGGERED LEAF SETS

Staggered leaf sets are the preferred growing configuration. Fortunately, buds that flurry tend to produce this desired attribute. Photograph 7.3 shows a typical staggered leaf formation. At each point where a leaf joins the main stem, a budding site will form. You can see this new growth in the photograph. Each growing stem will produce between four and eight budding sites as it is trained out towards the edge of the pot. Figure 4 is a plan from above—what I call a Bud Map—displaying how two buds (each with four growing shoots) can be trained horizontally, filling a 12-inch pot.
