Why do I get so bloated?

Bloating, along with variations in the frequency of your bowel movements, are symptoms suggestive of an irritable bowel. It’s extremely common, affecting up to one-fifth of us at some time during our lives. The exact causes are not known, but stress and psychological factors may play a significant role.

If you don’t have specific food intolerances, then simple dietary advice may help. If bloating is your main symptom, then avoiding too much fibre may help. Intermittent looseness of the stool can be aided with loperamide; and bowel spasm may be helped with mebeverine or Pro-Banthine (propantheline bromide).

We do know that food intolerances such as lactose intolerance may play a part in IBS in a small number of sufferers. Not every person with IBS will have food intolerances, and not every person with food intolerances will have IBS. Try excluding certain food groups from your diet that you think may make your symptoms worse. The most likely culprits are wheat and dairy products. Try two weeks without any dairy products first – if the bloating settles, then you have found out what you need to be cautious about. If it doesn’t settle then you can restart the dairy products but cut out wheat for two weeks and see. Make a food diary for a couple of weeks, noting everything you eat and drink and when, and noting your bloating and when it troubles you. You can look over the diary at the end of two weeks to see if you can spot a pattern.
