CHAPTER 16

The Communicator: The Throat Centre

Words have creative power, and they can raise or lower consciousness. They can inspire or tire, they can have depth or be superficial, and they can heal or hurt.

A visiting medicine man had arrived in our camp, and around twenty of us were gathered in a small room to welcome him and share food together. I was a newcomer to the camp, and the least experienced in the room, having just begun my training in shamanism and the Earth Wisdom teachings. People had finished eating and our chatter filled the space.

The leader of our camp rose, signalling that he was about to talk; we all fell respectfully silent and waited to hear what he had to say. No one was prepared for the words that left his mouth, least of all me. He announced loudly that I would now speak, and told me to stand.

I got to my feet, feeling the expectant gaze of every person in the room. They waited. I didn’t say a word. I had no idea what to talk about, and even if I’d known, I felt as if my throat had shut down; I couldn’t utter a sound. So I stood there with all eyes on me for I don’t know how many excruciating minutes. This was a group of people who had come to study the Earth Wisdom teachings, and they took the situation seriously: they sat and listened to the silence. At some point our leader stood again and began talking. My ‘speech’ was over.

Later on one of my fellow students came up to me, shook my hand, and said, ‘Good!’ That made me feel a little better.

The Throat Centre, or chakra, is called ‘the Communicator’; it is the centre of communication. In the teachings I was given, this centre houses your power to stand in the middle of your own circle and speak your truth. This comes from a place of knowing who you are. It means that you have a certain degree of command of yourself so that other people and situations do not repeatedly trigger you. This entails taking responsibility for yourself rather than blaming others and the world in general. When the Throat Centre is open and balanced, you can choose what nourishes you. A balanced Throat Centre enables clear vocal expression of yourself and your needs; the art is to do so while using discernment. In American Indian sign language ‘truth’ is an index finger moving like an arrow from your throat straight out in front of you. 64

The state of the Throat Centre determines how we communicate with others, whether at work, at home with family, or socially. Truth that is spoken in an insensitive and thoughtless way may be truth, but it is not good communication. If we are emotionally out of balance, our ability to communicate is affected. We can, for instance, become aggressive (including passively), and there can be a desire to dominate others. As with the Heart Centre, if the Throat Centre shuts down, the main culprit is fear.
