Chapter Six

Caitlyn sank onto the edge of the bed, swallowing against a surge of nausea. Nate was dead. She hadn’t intended to see him again, but this? Nate didn’t deserve to die.

To be murdered. Cold-bloodedly shot in the back of the head.

Snowball meowed and jumped into her lap. Caitlyn cuddled the cat close, grappling with what had happened.

“You think the shooter killed him to cover his tracks?” Devon asked. “I’m sure Powers must have given the guy Caitlyn’s name.”

“It’s one theory,” Ernest said. “But I can’t rule out the possibility these crimes aren’t connected.”

“Come on, Wade. You know this is way too much of a coincidence.”

“It’s part of the job to keep an open mind, Rainer. Something you’ll have to learn if you intend to get your own gold shield.”

His last comment had her glancing at Devon in surprise. She hadn’t realized he wanted to become a detective. In her humble opinion, he’d make a great one.

“I’m aware you need an open mind, but things are escalating. First he strangled a woman, then he tried to run us off the road, then he took shots at us outside the clinic, now this?” Devon raked his hand through his hair. “I thought you were heading over to talk to Powers earlier?”

“I did, he didn’t answer the door.” The detective’s tone held regret. “He wasn’t a suspect, so I couldn’t just break his door down.”

“No, I guess not.” Devon shook his head. “Any idea on time of death? Maybe the killer was already there when you came knocking? That made him panic and kill him.”

“I’m waiting for the ME to learn more, but I believe he was killed recently,” Ernest said. “Like you said, he may have been killed within the past few hours.”

Hours. If they’d found Nate Powers earlier, he might still be alive.

And the killer would be in custody.

She understood God had a plan, but at times like this, it was hard to understand.

“Keep me posted once the ME gets there,” Devon said. “If our killer did shoot Powers, then he’s trying to cover his tracks. Doubling down so that we can’t find him.”

“I know. Keep a close eye on our witness.”

Devon’s gaze clashed with hers. The determined expression in his eyes was reassuring. “Trust me, that’s the plan.”

“I’ll be in touch.” The detective disconnected from the call.

“I can’t believe Nate is dead.” She still couldn’t wrap her mind around it.

“I know.” Devon dropped down beside her, draping his arm over her shoulders. “I’m sorry. I wish we’d have gotten to him sooner.”

“Me too.” She put a hand over her stomach, willing her lunch to stay put. “It’s so awful to know this man kills people at the drop of a hat.”

“Two different types of crimes, though,” Devon said. “Strangling someone is usually a crime of passion or anger. But shooting a man in the back of the head is an execution.”

She paled.

“Sorry.” Devon gave her a brief hug. “I shouldn’t talk to you as a fellow cop.”

“It’s okay.” She tried to pull herself together.
