ECHINOPSIS HAEMATANTHA
This small-growing species, formerly known as a lobivia, comes from the mountains of northern Argentina where it can be difficult to find, particularly after the long dry period in winter. It has thickened roots like many cacti from that region and produces its spectacular flowers after the first rains in spring. It is not as easy to cultivate as most echinopsis and care must be taken not to let it stay wet for too long, so less than average water and a sunny place in the glasshouse are recommended. Offsets are not usually produced, so seed is the best method of propagation. The seedlings will flower when about 3cm (1in) in diameter.
