Chapter Seven
Cal seemed way too busy to pay me a visit over the next several days, but it didn’t stop us from eye-flirting from his doorstep to mine the few times we saw each other. I didn’t know what to think of it really. Was this it for us? A make-out session and then googley-eyes whenever we saw each other from afar? I wanted more. I definitely wanted more. I just didn’t know how to ask for it and not sound like that eager teenager I once was.
It wasn’t until Friday morning that everything changed. The note I found on my doorstep told me he wanted more too, and it had me feeling all kinds of nervous inside.
Hey, beautiful —
Meet me at my house tonight at six. Come on in. Bring Chance.
— C.
Well, if that didn’t make my heart flutter, I didn’t know what would. Not only did he call me beautiful, but he also wanted me to come over with my dog. Sweeter words couldn’t have been written. Including my dog was like including my child—he meant that much to me.
So, of course, I had to tell Maci. I’d given all the girls the rundown about our stormy night, which seemed like ages ago, and Maci insisted I give her a blow-by-blow with each new interaction I had with Cal.
Once I got to work, I took a picture of the note and texted it to her. I knew we wouldn’t have time to meet up today, so this would have to suffice. After all, her manager put her on a pretty hefty deadline with her next book, and I had to knock out quite a few manuscripts before she would hand me hers.
My phone vibrating on the desk made me jump.
Maci: He wants you. I can tell.
Sam: There’s no way you can tell that from a damn note. Think I should take something with me other than my dog?
Maci: Umm… beer? Wine? Yes, take booze—any kind will do.
I rolled my eyes. Of course Maci would suggest I take alcohol. Not that she was a drunkard or anything, but she always knew what it took to relax and have a good time.
Sam: I’m kinda in a liquor mood. Not sure I want to get totally wasted though.
Maci: Red Stag.
Sam: I’ve never tried it before.
Maci: I can’t believe we’re friends. LOL. It’s black cherry. You’ll love it. Take some cokes with you in case he doesn’t have any.
Sam: 10-4. You’re a lifesaver. And you love me. There’s no way you’d survive without me as a friend.
Maci: You’re so right. Have fun tonight!
That one simple phrase, have fun tonight, had my stomach all up in knots again.
I had to calm myself down. He was a man… just a man… and I had to keep remembering that or I’d drive myself nuts with anxiety. If my friends knew what a mess I was, they’d totally make fun of me. Hell, most women I knew would be on my ass for acting weak, or so they’d say.
