Description

This large fritillary can be easily confused with the Aphrodite Fritillary. On the Great Spangled, look for a cream-colored band that connects the two outer rows of silver dots on the underside of the hindwing (indicated below with red arrow). In Aphrodite, this band does not touch both rows of dots.

Season

Great Spangled is very common but in a very limited window of time. Look for this species to be most prolific when milkweed is blooming in summer.

Habitat

Fields, gardens, and woodlot edges.

Host Plant

Violets (Viola sp.). There are many species of violet, ranging in flower color from purple to yellow to white.
