Coordinate a meeting between local community leaders and my management team. Listen to the local leaders first and consider their ideas, but also explain that it is not the company’s direct responsibility to provide for all community needs. Past company leaders may have been ignoring community complaints for years so listening now may lead to a lessening of demands. A risk is that the locals may become more frustrated, disruptive or even violent.

Increase the wages paid to local employees of the mine so they are well above the average local wages and establish a management-training program for the best local employees. Assuming a significant percentage of the mine’s labor force are local nationals, this should help placate them by injecting more money into their community and by increasing opportunities for advancement. A disadvantage is that the increased labor costs may erode profits in both the short and long term.

Institute a community partnership initiative. Beyond basic infrastructure—schools, police forces and small business enterprises could also be improved through the mine’s support. Although this option is the most expensive, it would certainly reverse the public’s sentiments and will help create a new generation of qualified and cooperative workers.

Hire a civil affairs expert to work with the local media and press agencies. Although this may be considered propaganda to some, the local community has likely not been given enough relevant information about how the mine operates. This may help the disgruntled locals to consider why the mining company cannot be expected to provide for every need.
