‘The important thing is being upfront with the people who are close to me. I remember I went to a Iftar a few years ago, none of us were fasting for health reasons, and we had it anyway and it was nice, because it felt like we were still observing Ramadan.’

‘Mental health in general isn’t discussed in many communities, such as in Muslim and South Asian communities, and that has made it difficult to explain why I’m not fasting. But it’s also made it more difficult to come to terms with it because I didn’t have the language to talk about it and didn’t know how I would explain it to people in my life. Most people have been sympathetic and understanding but most of my extended family know about it and my immediate family aren’t sure about what it all means, but they have been really supportive.’

I think this is important. When people suffer from mental health issues and disordered eating, there isn’t a space to discuss it in many South Asian communities. Sometimes that leaves the person who suffers feeling isolated and spiral further. Sometimes it makes them doubt the seriousness of their health and continue to enact harm. •
