Chapter Thirteen
EMMA AND SAM were just entering the Yoder house when Lydia and Caleb pulled in the driveway.
âLooks like they made it,â Caleb said.
Lydia released a breath. âJah, they did.â She hadnât been worried about them getting to church; it was their opportunity for developing a deeper friendship that concerned her more. At least Emma and Sam would be apart during the service. The Yodersâ home was small, so the women sat in a different room than the men.
After Caleb helped her out of the buggy and into the house, Lydia headed for the kitchen, where the women had gathered. Although women were chatting to one another and her sister, Emma looked lost and uncomfortable.
Lydiaâs heart went out to her sister. Sheâd been overwhelmed when sheâd attended this gâmay for the first time. Raised in the same gâmay all their lives, the other members of their community became like family. Being among a crowd of strangers was never easy, but Emma had barely been out of the house since her accident, so it had to be overwhelming.
Emma spotted her, and the tension lines in her face relaxed. Emmaâs broad welcoming smile was accompanied by a please-rescue-me plea in her eyes, so Lydia hurried to her side and spent the time before the service introducing Emma and including her in conversations.
When the service began, Lydia sat beside Emma, her soul filled with joy that her sister was in church. Her mind flashed back to her own baptism day three years ago when Emma had attended church for the first time since her accident. What a joy that had been and how far her sister had come. Except for the gap in her memory, which Lydia hoped would never return, Emma had no lasting effects from the accident. Well, except for her fears.
Beside Lydia, Emmaâs lilting voice rang out as they began the second hymn they sang in every service, âDas Loblied.â Hearing her sisterâs enthusiasm for spiritual things touched Lydiaâs soul. She reached out and squeezed Emmaâs hand, surprising them both.
Her buoyancy lasted through the first sermon, the scripture reading, and the silent prayer. The bishopâs sermon that followed, though, about uffgevva, soon had had her pondering her life and her relationship with Emma. As he reminded them that they needed to apply this principle of giving up or surrendering their wills to Godâs and submitting to the authority and the wisdom of the community, a tear trickled down Lydiaâs cheek. Sheâd been so busy forcing her will on Emma that sheâd forgotten to trust God. She took her responsibility as older sister seriously and wanted only the best for Emma, but maybe it was time to let go of the burden sheâd been carrying and let God work things out.
