MICROSCOPIC CHARACTERS Queen/worker mandible with a deep notch in front of the back tooth (contrast B. frigidus, B. flavifrons, B. mixtus), midleg basitarsus less than 3x longer than its greatest breadth, outer (corbicular) surface of the hindleg tibia smooth and shiny (contrast B. polaris). Male hindleg tibia outer surface center smooth and shining, without short hairs, hairs of the back fringe longer than the maximum breadth of the tibia. Genitalia with the penis-valve head straight, the penis-valve head with a strong triangular tooth on its outer edge below the tip by a distance approximately equal to the breadth of the penis-valve head (contrast B. hyperboreus), gonostylus inner (medial) edge strongly concave, the submarginal groove broad and sharply defined, the front and back corners of the groove strongly acute and pointed (contrast B. polaris).
