One of the major areas we receive positive or negative feedback on every single day is our physical appearance.

We might want to deny it, but the feedback we get from others on our physical appearances contribute heavily to how confident we feel. Unfortunately, this means we as well are influenced by shallow things, both in ourselves and other people. If we’re honest, we judge people on their appearance in a way that we hope they don’t do to us — but they do.

This might sound shallow or depressing, but it’s how reality works. It’s part of human nature, just like cockroaches and centipedes are part of the circle of life. It’s a necessary evil. This chapter at the outset might seem fake, disingenuous, or fraudulent to you. Unfortunately, there’s a reason that people who look the part tend to get the part, and why we judge books by their covers. The world we live in is shallow. There’s no sense in willfully denying what makes the world go ‘round.
