Budgerigar lights gas: owner fined

A budgerigar blamed for a black-out offence at Sutton Cold-field, was stated to have turned on a gaslight by perching on the chain … its owner was fined £1.

At 12.15am a special constable saw an upstairs window flooded with light at 30 Victoria Rd, Sutton. The occupant of the flat, Donald Herbert Harper, was not at home.

This letter of explanation was read to the magistrates:—

‘Mr Harper has a pet budgerigar which is usually allowed out of its cage for half an hour each evening.

‘A few hours previous to the light being discovered the bird had returned to its cage but the door had not been closed.

‘While flying around the bird must have settled on the chain of the bracket and turned on the gas which is lighted by a pilot-jet.’

A police officer said the weight of the budgerigar was about three ounces and that would be sufficient to operate the bar-tap on which the chains hung.
