Horse-harness buckle from the Glasgow & South Western Railway, 1850 to 1923.

The large railway companies had their initials on the buckles used on their own horses’ harnesses, indicating the importance attached to the animals as part of the company network, and discouraging theft of the harness.

Brass buckle showing the attached thick leather. Steel prong.

The introduction of the motor vehicle brought about a great change and a consequent reduction in the harness-buckle-making section of the industry. Many other uses of buckles have passed into history. Suitcases, bags and the school satchels carried by every child were all fastened with straps and buckles. Twenty-first-century luggage, often made of synthetic material, is usually fastened with zips or Velcro.
