6. Rising Star

Bruce Springsteen had started the 1990s estranged from his brotherhood of the E Street Band, concentrating on his new wife, Patti Scialfa, and their growing family (they had three children in the early part of the decade), and recording with little focus, as evidenced by the resulting brace of albums released in 1992. Entering the twenty-first century, things were looking decidedly better for Bruce fans. Springsteen and Patti were very happily married, but, additionally, Bruce had reactivated his old band and taken to the road in support of the back-catalogue trawling that was the Tracks project. The world tour, with both Miami Steve and Nils Lofgren in tow to emphasise the comradeship and support that the band had always stood for in the eyes of its audience, was heralded as a triumph. The setlists mixed the classics with the ‘secret history’ that the outtakes box had finally unveiled. The tour eventually culminated in a record-breaking ten stand in New York’s Madison Square Gardens.

Bruce Springsteen’s reputation was built on the back of powerful and legendarily generous live shows, with two-hour concerts considered ‘short’. It was therefore a constant source of disappointment and frustration to fans that the only documents of the live Bruce experience were a fine but disjointed boxset and an unsatisfactory studio-bound MTV television show tie-in. The release of Live In New York City sought to address this by combining the best performances from two of the closing nights at Madison Square Gardens, to assemble a representation of the 1999–2000 Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band concert. Utilising an image of Bruce and Clarence striking typical poses in black silhouette and a fussy colour scheme and graphic, the album’s sleeve could have been for a show twenty years before. The recording and tour dates were not included in the title, an indication that the management were not going to relent and start issuing official ‘bootleg’ albums for each show or even each tour – this would stand as the full concert Bruce album for some time to come.

Highlights:

‘Mansion On The Hill’ – Bruce gave this Nebraska track a quietly dignified and countrified setting, featuring Danny Federici on accordion and Nils Lofgren on pedal steel guitar. Patti’s distinctive vocal is allowed more space than often and effectively combines as a duet with Bruce to add a slightly mournful, poignantly nostalgic tone.

‘Youngstown’ – the most fully orchestrated song on The Ghost Of Tom Joad is taken over by the E Street Band who play a blistering arrangement, complete with a standout Nils Lofgren solo.
