Chapter 10

Boogie wanted nothing more than to throw his phone down and shout curses into the universe, but he didn’t want to alarm Roz any more than he and Bentley already had. It was bad enough that she was inadvertently involved in their mess in the first place.

He couldn’t believe that Caesar had played him. He didn’t know if he was so angry because Caesar had gone back on his word or because, after the few days he’d spent with him, he was starting to like the man. Instead of blanking out on everything around him, Boogie paced his home for hours trying to come up with a game plan. He couldn’t give Shane another chance to get at him. The next time the two saw each other would have to be on his terms.

Just as he was just starting to form a plan, there was a knock at his front door. The loud banging jarred him out of his deep thought and made him instinctively grab for the Beretta he kept strapped to the bottom of his kitchen island. Cocking it, he slowly advanced to the door and glanced out the peephole.

“Damn,” he said to himself, seeing that it was only Bentley.

His paranoia was getting the best of him. Before he had checked to see who it was, half of him had wanted to open the door and just get to blasting. He was glad he didn’t. He would have forever regretted it. Unlocking the door, Boogie swung it open and let Bentley inside.

“My bad it took me so long, Boog—” Bentley stopped midsentence, seeing the gun in Boogie’s hand. “Everything straight, G?”

“Yeah. Just takin’ extra precautions,” Boogie said and let the door shut. After locking it, he walked back into the kitchen and set the weapon down on a counter. “You find out anything?”

“I gotta pour up for this,” Bentley answered, shaking his head. “What you got to drink?”

“All dark,” Boogie told him, grabbing two glasses down from his cabinet.

“Some Crown is good with me.”

Boogie nodded and poured them both a shot before handing Bentley a glass. Boogie wasted no time throwing his back. A hiss escaped his lips as the burning sensation of the liquid making its way down his throat hit him. They set their empty glasses down at the same time and looked at each other.

Bentley shook his head. “Have I ever told you about my cousin Gino?”

“Nah. He with one of the Families?”

“Nah. He’s one of those niggas who never picked a side. He never liked being told when, what, and why. Gino is somethin’ of a floater. He lives all over the state of New York. Well, right now his place of choice is Brooklyn. Bushwick to be exact.”

“And what about it?”

“A’ight, check this. Gino runs what I’ll just call a gun trade from his apartment.”

“He must work with Marco in Queens.”

“Didn’t you just hear me say that he ain’t part of any of the Families like me and you? He works for himself.
