8309 calls at Rotherham on 23 August 1969 with the 10:05 Scarborough–Plymouth, which it worked to Sheffield. Two years later this train was booked for a pair of York Class 20s. AUTHOR’S COLLECTION

On 26 July 1988 Trainload Metals 20107/ 112 worked the 15:55 Sheffield–Leeds, and came back on the 17:21 Leeds–Sheffield; and not long after, on 15 August, 20202 was given the task of piloting the DMU on the 06:19 Sheffield–Leeds.

There was only one known use of 20s assisting DMU trains in this area in 1989, and that was on 27 June when 20040/ 078 recovered the 19:00 Peterborough–Sheffield at Retford, and took the train to its destination. Two workings of note for 1990 were on 19 May, when 20088/ 163 worked the 10:25 Retford–Sheffield, hauling a DMU; while on 27 August, 20093 came to the aid of the DMU on the 13:24 Cleethorpes–Sheffield, and worked from Scunthorpe.
