• If something is usual, does it happen a lot?

• Does drenched mean very hungry?

Another issue to be aware of is that with yes/no items there is a 50% chance that a student can get an item correct through guessing, versus 25% in multiple-choice items. But a typical multiple-choice item offers four choices, which would be very difficult for children to hold in memory, with the item being presented orally. What we have done to address this issue is to essentially create four-choice items by developing clusters of four yes/no items, and asking each one separately. Below is an example, using clever. Notice that in the example below the first two items focus on a context in which the word might be used, while the third and fourth items focus on the meaning of the word. In presenting such an assessment to children, items for one word should be mixed together with items for other words in an instructional set so that all items for a particular word do not appear next to one another.
