Chapter Eleven

Andrew disliked hospitals. Everything was too bright and sterile. As he walked down the hallway, he glanced into the rooms and saw patients in beds. Wires and tubes connected immobile bodies to machines. Some patients were asleep, and the ones with open eyes had dejected expressions. Andrew could tell they would rather be anywhere else than this purgatory.

Andrew, Charley, Tungsten, and Louis went into Henrietta's room. She was lying in her bed apparently asleep. Nobody else was with her.

Henrietta's beauty struck Andrew at once. She had the fine skin and perfectly proportioned face of a fashion model. Golden hair cascaded over her pillow. Even though a sheet covered her body, he could tell she had large breasts and a narrow waist. He guessed she was in her forties. She was breathing normally, and her skin color was a healthy pink. If he didn't know better, he would've assumed she was just taking a nap.

She had a private room which was large enough for two patients. Bouquets of flowers were all over the place, and their scents filled the air. Sunlight flooded in through big windows.

"What now?" Andrew said.

"Let's try to read her mind," Louis said, "but if her brain is dead, it won't work. We can't connect to something that isn't there. By the way, that's one way to protect yourself from a psychic attack. A very potent sedative makes you immune to all forms of mental sorcery. Even a banshee can't hurt you."

Andrew made a point of remembering that interesting fact. It could come in useful. Tonya had mentioned something similar.

Charley leaned over Henrietta. "Her eyes are moving under the lids. I think she's dreaming."

"That's good news," Louis said. "We can share the dream and maybe talk to her. Ready?"

Andrew and Charley nodded. Tungsten closed the door of the hospital room and blocked it with his body.

Louis took the Princess Hand out of his pocket. Andrew settled down, drew upon the power of the small seam, and entered Henrietta's mind.

He appeared on a river bank under a hot sun. Filthy brown water which smelled like manure flowed sluggishly. The land on either side was dry, cracked dirt with just a few weeds. The wasteland extended to infinity in all directions.

Henrietta was kneeling at the edge of the water. Her tattered clothes looked like somebody had dumped a box of dirty rags on her. Her dusty face sagged with utter exhaustion. Tangled hair hung over her eyes.

Andrew stepped over for a closer look. She was rinsing a white shirt, but it never got any cleaner no matter how hard she scrubbed. The filth in the water was sticking to the fabric.

"What are you doing?" he said gently.

"Cleaning my husband's shirt," she mumbled.

"It's not working."

"I can't stop until it's clean. It has to be spotless."

"How long have you been trying?" he said.

"A long time."

Charley and Louis were with them in the dream.

Andrew turned to Louis. "I can fix her if you want."

"You have experience with mind-control victims?" Louis said.

"Yes, and this case doesn't seem that bad.
