ESTABLISHED: 1975.

SIZE: Plots range from 20 square feet in backyards to ¼ acre on the canal banks. The Viet Village Urban Farm is planned on 28 acres.

MISSION: The goal of the Viet Village Urban Farm is to improve local food system sustainability and security while increasing economic opportunities for community members and providing a culturally rich community space.

WHO’S IN CHARGE: Individuals manage their own plots and sell as independent vendors at the market and to the restaurants. The Mary Queen of Vietnam Community Development Corporation directs the Viet Village Urban Farm project.

SURROUNDING NEIGHBORHOOD: Predominantly lower- to middle-class Vietnamese Americans and African Americans.

ZONING: Residential (backyards) and canal banks.

FUNDING: The Catholic Church provides some local support, but most of the gardens are funded by the individuals who work them. The Viet Village Urban Farm is funded by the EPA Brownfields Program, Market Umbrella, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Ford Foundation, New Orleans Food and Farm Network, Tulane City Center (in-kind), Te-Enterprise (in-kind), and Spackman Mossop Michaels (in-kind). As of 2010, funding for the $380,000 permit for wetlands mitigation and for the $1.5 million phase I construction is being sought.

WHO EATS IT: The households growing the food and the Versailles community via market sales and restaurants.
