“Why do you have her phone?”

The blood dries up in my body, creating an instant thud in my temples.

I wait, but it’s not on purpose. I don’t speak. Can’t speak.

“She’s gone.”

“Who?” I’m growing angry, but the fear overshadows my rage.

“Ruby. She’s gone.”

I hear Ellie Mae before I see her rumbling down the dirt driveway. Only, I’m not relieved. Ruby is nowhere in sight.

The car door slams and I fight not to lunge, ripping through flesh and bone without giving a single fuck.

“Good to see ya, King.”

“Where is she, Deb? Or should I call you Kate?”
