CHAPTER THIRTEEN
âIâve got a plan,â said Thorn. âYou may not like it, my friends, but hear me out.â
He sat in the Great Father Clearing as the evening shadows lengthened, casting golden stripes through the trees across the exposed sandy ground. Nut, Mud, and Spider had gathered in a semicircle facing Thorn. They exchanged apprehensive glances, and Nut chewed his lower lip, narrowing his eyes.
âGo on,â he said.
âI canât think how to deal with the wolves, and believe me, Iâve thought hard.â Thorn eyed each of his friends in turn. âItâs not possible to make a plan. So all I can do is go to meet with them, think on my paws, and hope for the best.â
âJust hang on.â Nut sprang to his feet, his eyes widening. âMud and Spider and I have thought this over, and weâve talked about it, and weâve decided that that was a silly proposal. Even the Great Father canât be expected to make those brutes see reason. Donât even think about going.â
âThorn, you canât,â agreed Mud firmly. âI was wrong. Sometimes you shouldnât listen to me; I shouldnât have encouraged you. Itâs far too dangerous.â
âSpider likes to talk to other animals,â remarked Spider thoughtfully, âand even he thinks this is a crazy idea.â
âSpider knows,â said Thorn with a touch of irritation, âthat talking to other animals is the only way to really get to know them.â
âYouâre not going to get to know those wolves,â remarked Nut, âbefore theyâre spitting out your finger bones.â
âNo, listen,â said Thorn. He did not want to hear any prophecies of doom; he was already terrified enough of his own proposal. âItâs just possible that I can get them to explain to me why theyâre doing this. And if I understand why, then thereâs a chance I can persuade them to stop.â
âJust possible,â echoed Nut. âA chance. This is your worst idea yet, Thorn Highleaf, and Iâve heard a few.â
âItâs better than staying here and doing nothing,â cried Thorn. âThatâs not even an option!â
âOf course itâs an option,â snapped Nut, thumping the ground with a fist, âif the alternative is being eaten on the spot!â
âIâve got to agree with Nut,â said Mud, fiddling anxiously with his stones. âThorn, this is a bad plan. It may seem like a reasonable ideaâit did to me at firstâbut those wolves are not the kind of animals who listen.â
âNot like lizards,â said Spider fondly, tapping his own lizardâs head. It gave him an indignant look and nipped his finger. âLizards listen. Wolves, no they donât.â
âWait. What about Big Talk?â asked Nut suddenly. âThat lionâs one of your best friends, Thorn. Whatâs the point of having a lion friend if you canât ask him a favor? He could round up some more enormous lions and take the wolves out.â
âThat would be breaking the Code,â Thorn told him. âAnd Iâm Great Father. Iâm not doing that.â
As his friends stared at him, Thorn clenched his jaw to stop it trembling. Oh, he wished they werenât here to give such good advice.
