Cordy couldn’t have had dinner with Jack that night even if it was a good idea, because she was meeting Amanda at Aspen Creek to see the place.

“Oh my God,” Cordy said as she turned in a slow circle in the barn aisle, taking everything in, “Marcas is going to think he died and went to horse heaven!”

Amanda laughed. “I know; it’s pretty great, isn’t it? I pinch myself every time I come in here—I still can’t believe it’s mine. But hey, if you see anything you want to change, I’m happy to listen.”

“So far I wouldn’t change a thing.”

Grady hadn’t been kidding about the barn, it was drool-worthy. Ten roomy box stalls, each with its own run and access to a larger enclosure and an irrigated pasture. Varnished golden wood gleamed in the light of rustic wrought-iron chandeliers hanging from the rafters and the skylights. Shiny black bars spanned the top halves of the stalls, separating the horses and giving the barn an open, airy feel. Flower boxes bursting with red geraniums graced the outside of the log structure, along with a film clapperboard weather vane on top. The tackroom had plenty of racks for saddles and bridles, as well as built-in shelves and cubbies for equipment and grooming supplies, along with an attached bathroom. She had seen plenty of expensive barns over the years, but she’d found them ostentatious. This one combined elegance, efficiency, and alpine charm. It was designed primarily for the comfort and safety of the horses, yet was stylishly appointed. She loved it.

“The ring isn’t twenty-by-sixty,” Amanda said, referring to the dimensions of a dressage ring, “but if you want, we can put some ground poles down to outline it.”

“You’re so sweet to accommodate me,” Cordy said.

“You’re helping me out. It’s not a bother.”

“You’re helping me out—the Larkspur Inn pales in comparison.”

“Plus you get Harris, as in you’re always welcome to eat at the house. Just let him know ahead of time or you’ll never hear the end of it.” Amanda grinned. “I adore him, but he’s a pain.”

“Do I get to meet Solstice and Wave?” Cordy asked about the Brunswick daughters.

“Yes, and if you have time and want to, they’d love some dressage lessons. Wave is with her best friend and her family in a cabin in Maine for a few weeks, and Solstice is in summer school. She’s still riding, and we go to shows together, but she’s busy this year.”

“I look forward to it. I can’t wait to fall asleep to the sounds of a barn.”

“I used to love it when I lived here,” Amanda said.

“I’m sure I will, too.”
