As you become more agile with street training in quiet neighbourhoods, dial up the level of exposure to street traffic by introducing your pup to busier streets and neighbourhoods. View each positive training session as a building block toward giving your pup the pleasure of being off-leash trained. Then you can embrace all sorts of new experiences happily and safely, and your pup won’t be tempted to sink to manipulative tactics, constantly pushing the envelope to test your leadership.

YOU’RE IN CONTROL!

Always remember that your dog will respond most positively if your body language is positive. Be aware of what’s going on around you, but maintain strong, controlled body language. If you’re hesitant, fearful or anxious, you’ll saddle your pup with stress and anxiety. This, in turn, will have one or another effect on your dog: it will either force him into taking on the leadership position or it will make him nervous and jittery. Neither of these extremes is healthy, and your pup might even toggle back and forth from one extreme to another, depending on his mood and the situation. Don’t encourage these extreme behaviours. If you’re a reliable, assertive dog owner, your pup will follow your lead all the time. And that will make your daily walks enjoyable bonding experiences.
