Chapter Eight

Putting her phone away, she sighed. She’d been able to avoid Greyson and his girls for over a week. But with one call from him, she was on her way to the school again.

“Reno!” She called up to her brother in the loft without looking at him. He was going to love this, and she wasn’t in the mood for his teasing. “Greyson called. There are problems in Rio Bella. He’s going to be later than expected so I’m picking up the girls from school.”

“Ha! And you said you’re not the nanny? Okay.” He was coming down the ladder.

“I told him no, but he doesn’t know anyone else in town. I hate the thought of the girls being left at school.” She had been forgotten once. Bridges had thought Margarita was picking her up, and her sister thought that their brother had her. It was horrible being the last kid in the pickup line. “He says he’ll be here about an hour after school, so I can come back out and finish up a few things then.”

Jumping down, he landed in front of her with an unusually serious expression. “Are you sure he’s not interested in more than a nanny? He’s been in town long enough to meet other people, and he seems like a nice guy, but he’s not very open.” He shrugged. “We don’t know anything about him. Mom and the sisters all think you like him.”

She rolled her eyes. “It’s nothing like that. He still loves his wife. I’m an extra pair of hands to help with the girls. They’re super sweet. He’s been so busy with the farm that he hasn’t had a chance to meet anyone else. I don’t mind helping him.”

He leaned back and crossed his arms. “You do like him.”

“No.” Throwing a rag at him, she glared at him. “It’s not like that. The girls... Never mind. I’ll be back at the barn around four thirty.”

“Be careful, sis. I know you pretend that nothing bothers you, but you came home hurt. Greyson is a nice guy, but don’t let him use you. Okay?”

She swallowed. That was her fear. That Greyson was playing her. But she was doing this for the girls. “Those girls are the only reason I’m doing this. I know what it’s like to lose a parent at their age. Plus, they’re in a new town. That’s it.”

“I’m not buying it, but you’re a grown-up, so we’ll pretend you know what you’re doing.”

“Thanks.” Her tone dripped sarcasm. “Have you heard any word on the supplies we ordered?”

“Yeah. While you go play nanny, I’m going to get the trailer and head over the hill. Peter texted a little while ago that everything was in and ready for pickup. You can help me unload in the morning. Tomorrow will be a long day, so don’t worry about coming back to work tonight. Take an early one.”

“How kind of you.” She put her head down and went back to work. The hour went by too fast, and then it was time to get the girls.
