Chewbarkaâs Person
Daniel
My heart sinks as the door closes behind Ash. Sheâs on my side. I want her here. But I donât want her to see this meltdown.
Dad faces the front, exhales, and grips the steering wheel. Heâs still wearing his wedding ring. He turns to face me. âWhat youâve done today is not safe. Youâre not biking home alone.â
âIâm not alone. Ash is with me.â
âIâm calling your mother.â He reaches for his phone.
âDo you want me to tell her about Grace?â I blurt.
Dad pauses. He presses his lips together.
âI actually did want to see you.â I smear at my face with my sleeve. âI didnât come here just to ask about the dog. But please donât tell Mom about her. Sheâll get mad at me for being âirrationalâ or whatever.â My drippy state isnât helping my case. âI can get Chewbarka back to her owner. I donât need your help.â
Dad takes another deep breath. I feel like a burden. âHowâs school going?â
I blink at the sudden subject change. âWhat?â
âYou got some bad quiz scores this week. You look exhausted. Have you really only had that dog since Friday?â
âYou look at GradeFolder?â
âEvery day.â
âInstead of, I donât know, actually talking to us?â
âI called you every day the first week I was in the apartment. You answered your phone exactly once and gave me one-word answers.â
I hug Chewbarka.
âYouâve always hated talking on the phone. But thatâs not what was going on. Was it?â
âI didnât . . .â I didnât know what to say. It seemed mundane to discuss my day-to-day life. To tell him about getting a typical B-plus on a science quiz. About doing my math homework. Missing Frankie. And if I couldnât talk about the boring stuff, how could I talk about the important stuff?
âIâm concerned about you,â Dad says. âI want you to be happy. I can see that youâre not.â
âThen come home.â I sound petulant. âMitchellâs a mess without you. He needs you around.â Itâs easier than saying I need him too.
âWe told you, this move knocks forty minutes off my commute each way. Itâs practical.â
âDo you think we canât put two and two together? Are you that hard up for free time that you literally abandoned your family?â
He closes his eyes. âLetâs not be dramatic. Nobodyâs abandoning anyone.â
âWhy donât you just tell me and Mitch the truth? That you guys are getting a divorce?â
âWho said anything about a divorce?â
âMaybe Mom will when she finds out about Grace.â
Dad rubs his forehead the same way Mom does when sheâs stressed. I wonder which of them picked up the habit from the other, or if theyâve both always done it. âOkay,â Dad says. âFine. Sort out the dog situation on your own, since you clearly donât want my help. But Iâm not letting you two bike back home. Itâs too far. Iâll drive you.â
âOur bikes and the trailer wonât fit in your car.â
âThe trailerâs collapsible. Weâll put the back seats down. You can sit up front holding the dog. Ash is a little smaller, so she can squeeze in the back with the bikes.
