HOW TO ILLUSTRATE A TONAL PAINTING ONTO A BLACK SURFACE

Many artists prefer to work straight onto black or other colours, removing any risk of making marks on a stark white piece of paper. It is also a great way to try out new techniques; the more opportunities you give yourself to try out different approaches the more skilled you will become.

If we use black as an example for this demonstration, there are various alternatives of paper and card to try. It would be advisable to go for acid free, if you can find it, as this helps preserve your artwork for longer. Whether you want to choose a heavy card or a paper is entirely up to you – both will work. Daler-Rowney is a well-established art brand which offers a large selection of papers. You could try their acid-free mountboard, in black, or they offer a 150gsm weight sketchbook in black, called ‘Ebony’, which has a slightly water-resistant surface, but will still be fine to paint on. Canson also offers a range of black art papers in various weights and will also give you a nice smooth surface to work on.
