Helena loves Demetrius, who spurns her and is love with Hermia, but Hermia and Lysander are happily in love. To sort the lovers out, Puck was ordered by Oberon to spread magical juice onto the eyes of the sleeping Demetrius so that he would love Helena. But Puck mistakenly puts the spell on Lysander, who instantly falls in love with Helena upon waking. Then Puck charms the eyes of Demetrius, and both men are in love with Helena. Hermia then wakes up in the Athenian woods, where she was sleeping nearby Lysander. She is alone and fearful from a dream, and anxiously seeks her lover, unknowing of all that has transpired.
