Signs and wonders

I haven’t really been expecting any miraculous happenings. I’m of the Maimonides school of thought where this is a strictly no-magic show. Sometimes I think I see little ones that God puts on to keep me from giving up, but I’m not about to say they show evidence of anything. The evidence is all in my story plus the scriptural meanings I propose.

A funny one from back in April is the only one I want to share. It was right after a couple days of gruelling humiliation post book release, trying to convince a bunch of Internet folks that God probably doesn’t exist yet, and then having lots of people tell me to get back on my meds. And 0 people read the book.

If there’s one thing I hate, its spiders. The sight of one scurrying around will make me jump every time. Ironically the only spider in the world that doesn’t scare me is the Huntsman from back in Australia (The Hunstman is basically a spider, only scaled up to the size of your open palm, I always captured them and then released them outside, rather than squish ‘em).

Well, three days in a row, I woke up, went to the fridge to grab a drink, and there’s this little spider illuminated in the fridge-light, just dangling there hanging from the roof, exactly at eye level right in front of me. The first couple times I did a startled hop backwards as I clapped the spider into little giblets. The third day I just laughed, I could almost hear a sarcastic ‘Yuk Yuk Yuk’ from a possible future.

The fourth day, I actually remembered to turn on the light in the kitchen first and investigate, but there was no spider. Then I showered, got dressed to go for a walk to the shops, exited my apartment and locked the door, then turned around and… yup another little eight legged bastard dangling from the underside of the balcony above, right at eye level.

Fast forward to last week (I’m writing this on 18th August) and I arrived at Christmas Hill to do a few hours of blackberry removal. I’m still sore from doing a few hours of it yesterday, so I figure I’ll walk up to the top and have a look around and limber up.

For some reason that day I was even more introspective and worried than usual. I was full of thoughts like “I’ve been doing this for so long without a single non-dismissive person. Am I meant to fail?” and “Am I just doing it wrong, should I be trying to sway roomfuls of people with persuasive speeches instead of my polite paper trail?” or “What if there’s millions of rambling books from psychotic patients claiming that the most likely possibility seems to be that they are one third of the Messiah, and I just missed them in my hubris”

I started thinking about the Hill’s namesake, and had one of those out of the blue thoughts “What if suddenly Jesus showed up here in the flesh”.
