Rhys and the guys were in the process of checking out and paying for their groceries when the call came over their radios.

“All units: 10-36 code three at the intersection of Interstate 75 and Main. Possible 10-24 and 10-36 code four,” the dispatcher announced in a perfectly calm, clear, and precise voice. All that jargon indicated an injury traffic accident at I-75 and Main Street that included a possible car fire and tool-assisted vehicle extrication.

Rhys felt a cold, absolute certainty that he’d known only one other time in his life. The sensation lasted a fraction of a split second, but that was all it took to be transported back to the moment he saw the first responders whiz past football practice. Coach, I think I gotta go. It was ten — almost eleven — years ago now, but he could still feel every hair lifting on his neck, still feel his heart skipping erratically and his blood running cold. He’d simply known then, too.

That intersection was on Maree’s route out to Sadie Jones’ house. He tried to rationalize that too much time had passed since their conversation in front of the grocery store. He’d watched as she left the parking lot even before he’d grabbed a basket. He and the guys had divided and conquered to save time, but they’d still been in there for at least fifteen minutes. Probably more. Had to be closer to twenty-five. She was already at Marshall Mansion. She was most likely there already. Safe and sound.

But he knew. He just knew.
