sary to show all of the fossils in their time relationships. This distortion should be taken into consideration when studying the charts. Excluded from the chart of anatomically modern Homo sapiens are fossils that are dated younger than 30,000 years. They are irrelevant for our purposes.

The most important chart of all, the composite master chart, is also found in this chapter. This chart is a composite of all of the other charts in this book. On this composite chart the full impact of the contemporaneousness of the various fossil groups is revealed, especially the time relationship of the australopithecines to the human fossils. Because of the small size of the composite chart and the large number of fossils included on it, placement according to the date of the fossil is not quite as precise as it is on the charts of the individual fossil categories. The individual charts should be consulted for more precise dating purposes. (Remember that the author does not accept any of the evolutionist dates for these fossils.)

Because the lower portion of the chart of anatomically modem Homo sapiens fossils is the more significant (and the more controversial), we will deal specifically with items in that section. The fossil bones known as KNM-ER 1470, 1481, and 1590 have been discussed in chapter 15 and in the appendix. The morphology and size of these skulls together with the fully modern morphology of the leg bones (1481) indicate that true humans were on the scene in northern Tanzania at about 1.9 m.y.a. on the evolution time scale.

At the bottom of Bed I, the lowest bed at Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania, a circular stone structure was found that could only have been made by true humans. This object, fourteen feet in diameter, is considered to be the world’s oldest man-made structure. Technically, it is an artifact rather than a fossil. Mary Leakey discovered it on the oldest of the occupation sites (or living floors) at Olduvai during the 1961-62 digging season.

Mary quickly realized that there was a pattern in the distribution of these stones, an intentional piling of stones on top of each other. The stones themselves are lava rocks that are not indigenous to what was a lakeshore when the structure was built. The several hundred rocks were brought from a source some miles away. Other stones on the occupation site are scarce and haphazardly scattered.

What was this structure? No one knows. Was it a habitation hut, a hunting blind, a weapons pile, or a shelter of some kind? The people of the Okombambi tribe in Southwest Africa construct such shelters today. They make a low ring of stones with higher piles at intervals to support upright poles or braces. Over these poles are placed skins or grasses to keep out the wind. Turkana tribesmen living in the desert of northern Kenya make similar shelters.

What staggers the mind is that the living floor where this structure was found was dated by evolutionists at 1.8 m.y.a. (K-Ar). Revisions34 published in late 1991 indicate that it may be as old as 2 m.
