Cathy had been doing well in Uni, sailing through and enjoying her third year exams. She’d entered her fourth year, confident and able, with a clear idea of how she’d progress to the end of her course and into employment in the next few years. She had it all mapped out. A few years in emergency rooms, then specialize in Microbiology and Virology. Tom loved that Cathy was so intelligent and focused on her goals but, if he was being completely honest, he felt a little worried at times that her life would take her in too vastly a different direction from his, preventing them from continuing to move on parallel paths.

No matter how much he pushed those feelings and insecurities to the back of his mind, a small part of him had accepted with a sort of resigned sadness that her intelligence and profession, exacerbated by the massive contrast of his own chosen career, would remove them from each other’s social circles. The thought of it would panic him while far away from her but an ever-present mocking voice, fuelled by low self-esteem whispered to him “well, it’s what you deserve.” Fuck you, he’d retort, I’ll enjoy her and us while we have each other.
