When she finally gave in to temptation, she fully expected to see a mask of righteous fury, all tight lines and muscle. Instead, his face was blank.

His game face. She’d seen it when he’d met Max, when she’d quizzed him about his intentions. He kept his thoughts firmly under lock and key. When he finally did speak, the room practically vibrated with restrained anticipation.

“Certainly, marriage is on my ten-year plan.”

“Jake, it’s not—” Kimberley began. “What?”

“I’ll think about it.”

After a stunned silence, discussions finally moved on to the charity ball, but Holly couldn’t drag her eyes away from Jake. When he wasn’t looking, she stared at him, only to be caught not once, but three times, by his mocking green gaze.

Just when she thought she had him pegged…She’d fully expected him to blow that idea out of the water, not to actually consider it. But of course. As she quickly handed out the estimated costings for the ball, she shook her head. He had a ten-year plan. He’d approach finding a wife just like any other business deal. He’d want the best—breeding, looks, class. A privately schooled daughter of some brain surgeon, or a minor royal with centuries of hyphenated ancestors.

As if sensing her mounting turmoil, Jake glanced at her. The small conspiratorial smile teasing his mouth incensed her even more.

Damn the man.

For the next thirty minutes everyone added to Holly’s proposal. They all agreed it should be a glitzy, glamorous black-tie event specifically designed to raise awareness of Australia’s over-stretched rescue services, and all proceeds would go to AusSAR, the national search and rescue organisation that had led the search for Howard Blackstone’s downed jet.

When the meeting finally broke up, Holly quickly gathered her paperwork and was first out the door, desperate to focus on work and not other, more dangerous thoughts.

Jake was James Blackstone. Practically Australian royalty. So out of her league.

She stopped her errant thoughts. Since when had she started to entertain those feelings?

“You and Jake should discuss his press statement,” Kim said as she emerged from the room and handed her a piece of paper. “And here’s a few more people to add to the guest list.”

Holly glanced down at the paper. “Matt Hammond?”

Kim nodded. “Yes. We’ve got Jake back.” She looked pointedly at Jake, who was in discussion with Ric and Ryan at his office door. “It’s time to start building some bridges and bring this family together again.”

Holly followed Kim’s eyes and at that precise moment, Jake looked straight at her. Their gazes immediately locked, held. And in that breathless moment, her skin began to heat, like smouldering embers of a furnace stoking back to life.

His study of her felt different. She felt different. More aware of the sensual slide of her shirt over her skin, the way her breath faltered on the intake before coming out in a sigh. The way his eyes, full of exquisite knowledge, skimmed the parts of her his hands had touched. Of course, if she were interested, she’d be preening about now.
