Slide, don’t squawk

When you play with a slide (a tube made of metal, glass, or even plastic — the guitarist’s wedding ring), lots of unintended non-musical sounds can emanate from your guitar if you don’t take precautions. Look at the “Statesboro Blues” performance notes for the lowdown on clean, painless sliding. The ears you save may be your own.

Slide reality

Now that you’re in an open tuning (not to mention wearing a bar on your finger), your guitar reality has changed. The positions of D major and minor pentatonic are now different, so follow the tab to get comfortable with the licks. Some slide techniques to get acquainted with:

Vibrato with a slide is a back-and forth shake of the bar, horizontally (instead of a slight vertical bend and release).

When you slide up to or down from a single note, make sure you mute or dampen the rest of the strings with your picking hand; some prefer to play fingerstyle with a slide, so the free fingers can rest on the strings that need to be muted.
