Chapter 15: Run like the Devil

––––––––

The explosion was not a fiery mass of destruction like what had wrecked Our Lady of Lourdes. That was reserved only for the foundations. The green flame swept through the foundation of the mosque like an unchecked flood.

The explosives in the rest of the building, however, were conventional bombs. They ripped through the rest of the building support structure like my blade through wood.

So first, the supernatural wave of destruction dropped the mosque thirty feet below street level, and the rest of the mosque exploded, collapsing the rest of the building into one giant pile of stonework.

Thankfully, we were already in the door’s threshold when I’d spotted Khalil Kozbar; otherwise Lermon, Alex, and I would have all been toast.

When the last of the explosions had gone off, and the last stone had settled, I finally armored down and stopped covering my partner and the Texas Ranger.

I looked back to the remains of the mosque and frowned. “At least, he’s not only blowing up anyone else’s church.”

Alex gave a humorless laugh. “Yeah. Quite ecumenical of him. A great comfort.”

I looked to the Ranger and offered him a hand up. “So, Lloyd, what brings you out here?

Lermon smiled back at me as he came to his feet. He looked from the wreckage to me. “That’s your first question?”

Alex stood creakily. I helped him to his feet as well. “You are a little out of left field,” Alex said.

The Ranger shrugged. “Kozbar is a fugitive from Texas law. Also, your son sent a company jet to pick me up. I got some guys to tag along as well. They’re at the hotel. They’ll sure be annoyed that they missed this.”

“Lucky them,” Alex snarked. He looked around. “How did you get here?”

Lermon looked around as well. “Huh. I took a taxi. Guess he didn’t want to be paid.”

Alex glanced at the destruction. “Can’t imagine why he didn’t hang around.”

I rolled my eyes. “Everyone into the car. Before someone starts asking questions we can’t answer.”

Alex snickered as he reached for a door. “I can tell you what the answers are. Obviously, MS-13 is a collection of racists. They hate Muslims. So they came in and shot up the place. Things spiraled. The end.”

I sighed as I climbed into the armored Humvee. “One, cops aren’t that lazy. Two, Islam isn’t a race. It’s a religion.”

Alex laughed. “So shoot me for not being PC. And yes, cops are that lazy. You have MS-13 bodies. You have members of the congregation inside.”

“Aren’t you assuming that there are any bodies left?” Lermon asked as he slid inside.

Alex shrugged. “Good point. But I’m not on the arson squad or counter terrorism.” He grabbed the strap to buckle up. “Because you know either someone is going to blame arson or that Jihadis blew up their own mosque.”

Lermon arched a brow. “Isn’t that what happened? And what about that monstrosity in there. Are we sure it’s going to stay down?”

I started the engine and said, “No reason why it should.
