Celesta

Our weekend away was both heaven and hell. The more time I spent basking in our growing romance, the guiltier I felt for keeping my secrets from him. So when he left for the office, I immediately surrounded myself with the last of Dad’s notebooks.

After hours of scrutinizing everything, all the notebooks and files had been scoured. The only note I found by the end that Dad hadn’t eliminated through all of his follow up was TJ’s PD. A quick internet search revealed way too many hits to narrow down my focus, but my gut told me that was the clue as to who Victor was working with or for. I simply just didn’t have the resources to figure it out. All that was left for me to do was to finish the last year of accounting ledgers and tell Toven everything.

“Knock, knock,” Mrs. Burkett called as she rapped on the open door to my room.

I glanced up from the ledger in front of me. “Come in.”

She held a tray in front of her with a covered plate. “Thought you might be hungry.”

I blinked rapidly a few times to clear the number haze from my eyes. “I lost track of time.”

Mrs. Burkett set the tray in front of me and removed the lid, revealing a chicken wrap, a pickle and chips. My stomach rumbled right on cue at the sight of the food. Immediately, I picked up the crisp dill pickle and chomped on it.

“Thank you,” I mumbled once I swallowed the first bite.

Mrs. Burkett peered around my room at the stacks of papers and books. “My word. What in the world has Toven got you doing? I thought everything he needed you to do was on the computer.”

“Oh, this isn’t for Toven. This is all unfinished work my dad left behind when he died. I kinda feel like I need to finish it for him. You know?” I shrugged, hoping she’d be satisfied with that explanation.

She patted my shoulder. “I understand. Finishing what he left undone will help you honor him and bring you some closure.”

“Exactly.” I took a sip of my sweet tea. The sip was so refreshing. I was convinced the rivers in heaven had to flow with this perfect drink.

“I’ll leave you to your work, dear. Toven called and said he’d be home before dinner time, but that the two of you wouldn’t be eating here.”

“Hmmm. I wonder what that man has up his sleeve now?” I mused.

“He seems to really be settling into the role of a romantic, huh?” she asked with a chuckle.

“Yes, he does.” And I loved it.

“Enjoy your time with him. Let me know if you need anything.” She gave me a wide, knowing smile.

“Thank you.”

After she left, I turned my attention back to Dad’s accounting ledger. The missing funds had increased each year over the past six years. I expected the trend to continue with the past year as well. As I ate, I continued to copy the actual numbers from the ledgers into the computer spreadsheet that had been doctored.
