Chapter Eighteen

Kali entered Vasilije's study to find herself in the middle of something very personal. In front of her stood Sasa facing her sire, who stood behind his desk, and his other vampire Elizabeth behind him, leering over his shoulder in a way that immediately made Kali uncomfortable. She hadn't had many encounters with her, but Elizabeth was the type of female others of her sex often disliked and for good reason. There was something in the way she slinked about like a snake or some kind of cat on the prowl that made Kali sure she couldn't be trusted. On top of that, she'd heard Thane tell enough tales about her activities at Vasilije's parties all those years ago to know that she shouldn't be standing that close to him.

"Sasa, it's for your safety. Things are getting too dangerous. Solenne has been taken. I don't want to see that happen to you."

"Vasilije, don't do this. Please don't send me away to New Orleans. There's nothing for me there. I want to stay here. We talked about this," Sasa pleaded in a voice that made Kali's heart ache.

Kali moved to stand against the wall, out of the way from all of this. Vasilije cupped Sasa's face with his hands and smiled sweetly, making Kali think all this might really be to keep her safe.

"Sasa, my first and only concern is for your safety. I love you and don't want to see you hurt. The news from Nice isn't good. Terek thinks that it's possible we may never find Solenne. I don't want to risk that with you."

From behind him, Elizabeth chimed in. "Yes, Sasa. Vasilije is the best kind of sire. He'd never put one of his vampires at risk."

From where she stood, Kali saw a look of hurt settle into Sasa's features. How her sire couldn't or wouldn't see it she couldn't imagine.

Vasilije seemed to ignore the female behind him, who was obviously goading Sasa, and leaned in to kiss her tenderly on the lips. "Sasa, don't fight me on this. I want you away from all of this Sons business, and LeClerc can keep you safe."

Tears streamed down her cheeks as she took his hands in hers, her eyes begging him to reconsider. "Don't do this! Don't push me away! This is my home!"

Vasilije merely kissed her again and smiled. "It's done. When it's safe for you to come back, I'll call you as soon as possible. He's expecting you tonight, so get ready."

Gloating, Elizabeth purred, "I promise to make sure your man stays out of trouble, Sasa. He's in good hands here."

Sasa stormed out in tears past Kali, who remained stunned at what she'd just seen. Had the rumors of Vasilije's infidelity with Elizabeth been true, after all? Thane had sworn he'd betrayed Sasa, but Kali had put those claims off as a jealous man's wishful thinking.

"Kali, I wanted to speak to you about how we can best utilize Elizabeth here."

Vasilije sounded like some upper management type introducing a new employee to the one whose position she was about to steal.
